Job Description


We are looking for a new senior scientist or engineer with a quantum optics background to join our experimental quantum networking R&D team.  You’ll be the lead scientist on a variety of early-stage R&D projects.  Your role entails researching, designing, building, testing and documenting the experimental quantum optics systems the company needs to keep at the forefront of the field.  You’ll take responsibility of these research and development projects and deliver demonstrations of feasibility to the company.  Other optics, electrical and software engineers can support you and use your provided feedback to push the experiments forward, while you remain the driving researcher with the overall view and responsibility.  Your work will lay the foundations for professional engineers to develop upon.  You’ll collaborate with other scientists and engineers, especially as you bring your work to stages of higher robustness and repeatability expected from a commercial product.


You are passionate about quantum optics, photonics and technology and you want to contribute to new ground-breaking tech.  You work independently, are a pro-active, hands-on-person, and you can adapt easily to rapidly changing priorities. Above all, you’re a team player, and excited to work in a mixed team of hardware engineers, software engineers, and scientists.



Your Profile


You are someone with:

  • a PhD degree in quantum optics
  • experience with experimental research on quantum optics setups, ideally involving quantum interference measurements e.g. two-photon interference, bell-state measurements, etc. in quantum communication
  • experience in building and debugging experimental quantum optics setups, especially ones combining RF signals
  • expertise using fiber optics, photonic devices, fiber lasers, etc,
  • expertise using and characterizing EOMs, polarization optics, single photon detectors
  • experience in running long-term stabilization of optical setups, e.g. frequency locking of laser systems, phase locking of challenging interferometers
  • understanding of electronics to effectively work together with electrical engineers and firmware programmers
  • Experience with Python, (Rust is a plus)
  • Experienced with software engineering best practices (version control (git), documentation, code-reviews, etc.).


We expect that the successful applicant will not satisfy all the above points, but has expertise in key areas and significant knowledge in most areas.
